bet365 is the world’s largest online gaming and sports betting group. Since being founded in 2000 it has grown to have over 5,000 employees worldwide.

This project involved creating a new careers hub to showcase their range of talent and help recruit new employees. The relatively open brief allowed us to be creative with every aspect of the design, from improving the website structure and user journey - to planning photo shoots and working with copywriters to establish the right tone of voice.

The process involved:

  • Working with their brand product owners to gather requirements and coordinate a set of responsive designs.

  • Assisting with product discovery. Working together with business analysts to identify their customer segments.

  • Researching and validating all concepts. Conducting remote testing, lab sessions and a range of research methods to drive product development and validate any new hypothesis.

  • Working as part of a development team to provide design and usability direction.

Research.

This project involved creating a service that aided internal recruitment teams to list positions and coordinate interviews and attract new potential employees. Therefore, I had to conduct a variety of research to better understand the needs of varying target audiences.

I gathered qualitative information from the recruiters that would use the service each day by running frequent focus groups and shadowing individuals. It was important to understand how they worked and highlight what tasks could be alleviated by having the right tools.

A stakeholder requirement was for the website to provide insight into the variation of roles on offer at bet365, as such a large, global company recruited within many industries from software development, brand and marketing, hospitality, to customer services and fraud protection to name a few. I felt that the best way to showcase talent was to interview a number of employees to gather content and help tell their story on the website.

I spent time conducting market and competitor analysis to understand how careers websites can be used as a tool for potential employees. The website needed to be both a marketing tool and informative hub for a wide range of local and international users, so competitor insights helped establish the correct tone of voice and spark ideas for design styles.

Ideation and design process

With recruitment employees and potential candidates having such varying user needs, I developed a number of personas to help visualise their experience and requirements. Outlining the motivations, actions and frustrations of each persona enables you to design with them at the centre of focus and helps you analyse whether a certain flow or concept will meet their needs.

I used these personas throughout the design process below, analysing each design through the lens of a customer to ensure that it was effective in meeting each user's needs.

Outlining the website map and various possible user journeys.

I use this to visualise the entire process and analyse how successful it is at satisfying customer needs.

Creating mood boards to outline imagery, illustrations, visual aids or language.

Despite this relating to a number of other design areas such as brand and marketing, it helps to paint a picture of a service. All of these elements affect a user experience and perception of a product, so it’s important to have a consistent approach.

This stage of the project was particularly important for this brief as the existing service was over ten years old and lacked consistency with the brand guidelines that had developed over time.

Drawing mock-ups of components, features or entire webpages.

This is a great starting point to discuss ideas or design concepts. They can be used to start presenting ideas to stakeholders and testing end-end UX flows on customers.
